About Us

Who We Are

Since it’s foundation in 1835 by two of the City of London’s ancient food Liveries, the Fishmongers’ & Poulterers’ Charitable Institution has been giving assistance to people who had worked in the two namesake trades and found themselves struggling financially. Although applicants need no longer be members of either Livery, the Institution retains links with each company through their representative Trustees.

What We Do

In the past help was often by providing almshouse accommodation. However, nowadays help is given through the discretionary awarding of grants.

The Trustees consider each case on its merits. Recently we have helped applicants buy mobility scooters, adapt their homes to make them more disability-friendly, or provide a respite holiday for a long-term carer. We only have limited funds so we will often make grants in collaboration with other charities to reach a larger total.

We do not support those working in the fishing industry, nor do we help those who work or have worked in fish and chip shops. Our funds are limited so the Trustees give preference to applicants who have spent at least ten years in the trade.
